As a part of autumn session of the Dutch Photography Experience project and the exhibition UNDERCOVER FotoDepartament announces an open call of the workshop:
Workshop of the journal about contemporary photography FOAM
Conducted by Art Director Hamid Sallali and Managing Editor Elisa Medde
Place: FotoDepartament Gallery, 40, Fontanka river emb., Saint-Petersburg
Dates: three days /29 November – 1 December 2013/ 10.00 – 18.00
Participation fee: 6000 rub.
Deadline: 20 November’ 2013
Language of the workshop: English (with translation into Russian in case it’s needed)
The workshop held by Foam Magazine’s Art Director Hamid Sallali and Managing Editor Elisa Medde will focus on editing and layouting techniques applied to the photographic image. Hamid and Elia will present some graphic and aesthetic strategies, which help to oragnize images and texts in the most advantageous way, and will help to use it in personal projects. the perticipants of the workshop will learn how to create decent adequate portfolio, how to work with personal projects and to create books, to prepair publications, to organize online portfolio or personal website.
Dutch photojournal Foam has been published during more than 10 years. At the moment it is one of the most important editions about the contemporary photography and actual photo pratices. Foam enables people all over the world to experience and enjoy photography, whether it’s at our museum in Amsterdam, via our internationally distributed Foam Magazine or online.
Foam is for photographers, picture editors, designers and all those who have a passion for photography. The journal focuses especially on exhibitions, publications, discussions and specific projects relevant to contemporary themes in this field. Of course, well known photographers and historical work has an important place on its agenda. But special attention is also given to nurturing upcoming artists.

Elisa Medde (Italy, 1981) is the managing editor of Foam International Photography Magazine. Elisa selects as part of the editorial team the work presented in Foam Magazine. She researches for upcoming issues, chooses the contributing writers and keeps an eye on the final editing. After studying History of Art, with majors in Iconology, History of Contemporary Art and History of Photography with Marina Miraglia at La Sapienza University in Rome, Elisa worked for various cultural institutions, publishing houses and non profit organizations as project and research coordinator as well as independent curator. Her academic research reflects on the relations between images and power, particularly in the context of contemporary photography.
Hamid Sallali (Vlissingen, 1983), since 2007, is a graphic designer at branding agency Vandejong in Amsterdam. Projects he has been working on over the years range from brand identities to magazines, campaigns and websites, bringing attention to clear communication, detail and simplicity. In addition, Hamid works as art director for Foam Magazine and Unseen Photo Fair, both at Vandejong. In his spare time he works in his studio on other projects.
