Helsinki School is the unique phenomenon in the field of contemporary photography – whole photography «school», trend, formulated and developed by one curator, professor of University of Arts and Design in Helsinki — Timothy Persons.
Helsinki School became the name uniting lecturers, students and graduated students of Faculty of picture of University of Arts and Design in Helsinki. Gallery TaiK was established in 1995 in Helsinki Finland. It is the prime gallery for those selected artists who now make up what is known as the «Helsinki School». It has grown into one of the leading photographic galleries in northern Europe with its permanent exhibition space situated in Berlin Mitte since 2003.
The concept of «The Helsinki School» is not defined by a specific discipline, nationality or geographic region. It represents an approach, a way of thinking that has evolved out of a process of teaching at the University of Art and Design, where each generation is given the chance to invent themselves.
Now the internationally acknowledged artists are gathered together in extensive exhibitions travelling around the world. The exhibitions are curated by Timothy Persons. These exhibitions have established the Helsinki School as a unique approach in how to teach and apply use of the camera as a conceptual tool. The Helsinki School includes both photographs and videos from selected artists who have attended, graduated from or taught at the University of Art and Design.
Helsinki School together with Hatje Cantz (German publishing house) has recently produced the third album, presenting most talented students graduated from Taik.
Helsinki School is the continuing development of young photography – starting from the program of academic photo-studies, by cooperation of photographers and gallery, sole and group exhibitions, issuing the albums with works of new graduates of the University, participating in art-fairs and museum exhibitions. That is the way how young photographers get the comprehensive support and development. Helsinki School is continuously developing and marking the development of Finnish photography by the exhibitions — that is why it is so unique.
Around 100 large-format photos and video-projections by 12 leading emerging Finnish photographers will be presented in the exhibition in Saint-Petersburg.
Participants of exhibition: Joonas Ahlava, Wilma Hurskainen, Kalle Kataila, Hannu Karjalainen, Milja Laurila, Anni Leppälä, Susanna Majuri, Nelli Palomäki, Jari Silomäki, Mikko Sinervo, Ea Vasko, Niina Vatanen.
